We will be starting the Family Life program this week. This program should take about a month to get through. I have no intention of rushing through this book; it is honestly one of my favorite topics to teach in 5th grade! In college, I always enjoyed communications classes and learning about communication styles. I have read many communications books (focusing on family and couples communications). In class, we will be talking about communicating with friends and family. I have always felt that being able to assess and express one's thoughts and feelings is crucial to living a happy and healthy life. Additionally, I feel very strongly and passionately about teaching kids about respecting and taking care of themselves, physically and emotionally. For the part that the students fear the most, I will be splitting up the boys and girls for one day of the program. The students received the family life books today, so if you want to look through them to see what topics are covered, you can do so before we get to that section. However, I will say that I thought it was going to go into a lot more detail and explanation, but it is pretty brief. Most of the focus is on puberty and how our own bodies change (the focus is NOT on physical relations with the opposite sex). During this program, I highly encourage questions. If the students do not feel comfortable talking about certain topics, they do not need to share. They are free to ask me any questions they like, however I am able to say whether or not I feel comfortable answering. A majority of the topics covered in family life will be about topics they can relate to (family, friends, decision-making, real life problem solving, etc.). That being said, I highly expect the most mature 5th grade attitude from them during this time. Yes, there will be some giggle moments and yes we will be sharing a lot of stories. Yes, some of these topics might seem "dumb" and others might seem "gross" but all of the topics are topics that all of these students will face throughout their lives. I expect the students to be courteous and respectful and take this program seriously. I cannot wait to explore these topics with this class! Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns. I strongly encourage you to keep this open communication flowing between you and your student as well! :) Circle of Prayer
